What Neurotoxin Treatment Actually Does
Botox and Dysport are purified botulinum toxin type A. Injected in small, measured amounts into a specific muscle, they interrupt the signal that tells that muscle to contract. The muscle relaxes, the skin over it stops folding, and the line that folding created softens.
That mechanism explains what these products can and cannot do. They work on dynamic lines, the ones that appear when you move: the horizontal bands across the forehead, the vertical elevens between the brows, the fan of crow's feet at the outer eye. They do very little for static lines, the creases that sit in the skin at rest, and nothing at all for lost volume. Static lines and volume loss are usually addressed with dermal fillers, biostimulation, or resurfacing, often alongside neurotoxin rather than instead of it.
Dose matters more than product. A conservative dose softens motion while leaving expression intact. A heavy dose freezes it. Which one you get is a conversation, not a default, and your provider will map your treatment plan on your own face before anything is drawn up.
Botox and Dysport behave slightly differently. Dysport tends to show up a day or two sooner and spreads a little more from the injection point, which some injectors prefer across broad areas like the forehead. Botox tends to stay closer to where it is placed, which is useful for precise work. The per unit prices are not comparable to each other, because the two products are dosed on different unit scales. Compare the cost of the full treatment, not the cost of a unit.

Your provider watches your face move. Raise your brows, frown, squint, smile, clench. Muscle strength and pattern differ from person to person, and the map comes from what your face actually does, not from a diagram.
Plan and dose
You get the unit count and the total cost before anything is opened. If your goals need more than one modality, you will hear that here, with what each piece costs, so you can stage it over time if you want to.
Consent and photos
Standardized before photos in consistent lighting. These are for your chart and for comparison at follow up.
Treatment
A series of small injections with a fine needle. Most patients describe it as a quick sting. The whole thing usually takes under 15 minutes once mapping is done.
Two week follow up
Included at no charge. Your provider checks symmetry and full effect. If a small adjustment is needed, this is when it happens.

If you can, avoid alcohol for 24 hours and blood thinning supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E, and high dose NSAIDs for several days, since these raise the odds of bruising. Do not stop a prescribed blood thinner without talking to the prescribing clinician. Come with a clean face if that is easy, though makeup can be removed here.

During
You are upright, awake, and talking. Ice or a vibration device can take the edge off. Topical numbing is available if needles are difficult for you, and it adds about 20 minutes to the visit.

Immediately after
Small raised bumps at each injection site settle within 15 to 30 minutes. Pinpoint redness is normal. Bruising happens in a minority of patients and covers with makeup after the first day.
04 / The first four hours

Stay upright, skip strenuous exercise, avoid heat such as saunas and hot yoga, and do not rub or massage the treated areas. These precautions reduce the chance of product migrating where it was not intended.

Fit, limits, and risk
Safety and Candidacy
Botulinum toxin has a long clinical record when it is dosed correctly and placed by a trained injector. It is not right for everyone.
You should not be treated if you
are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a known allergy to any component of the product including human albumin, have an active skin infection at the planned injection site, or have a neuromuscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert Eaton syndrome, or ALS.
Tell your provider if you
take aminoglycoside antibiotics or other agents that interfere with neuromuscular transmission, have had a previous reaction to a neurotoxin, bruise very easily, have a bleeding disorder, or have had recent facial surgery.
Possible side effects
Bruising, tenderness, headache in the first day or two, and asymmetry that usually resolves or can be corrected at follow up. Eyelid or brow droop is uncommon, is caused by product reaching a muscle it was not aimed at, and resolves on its own as the product wears off. Serious adverse effects from the spread of toxin beyond the treatment area are rare with cosmetic dosing but are described in the product labeling, and your provider will review that with you.
Results vary. Muscle strength, dose, product, injection technique, and individual metabolism all influence how much softening you get and how long it lasts.

Will I look frozen?
Not unless you ask for that. The frozen look is a dosing outcome, not an inherent property of the product. Our default approach is a conservative dose that softens the depth of a line while preserving normal expression. You can add more at your two week follow up if you want a stronger effect, which is why we start low rather than high.
How long does it take to see results?
Most patients notice softening between days 3 and 5, and the full effect is present at about day 14. Dysport often shows up a day or two earlier than Botox. Judge your result at the two week mark rather than in the first few days, because the effect is still developing before then.
How long does it last?
Typically 3 to 4 months for facial treatment. Underarm sweating treatment usually lasts considerably longer, often 6 to 9 months. Duration is influenced by dose, muscle strength, metabolism, and how physically active you are. Some patients find that consistent treatment over time lets them go slightly longer between appointments.
What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?
Both are botulinum toxin type A and both relax the treated muscle. Dysport typically has a slightly faster onset and diffuses a little more from the injection point, which can be useful across broad areas. Botox tends to stay more localized, which is useful for precise work. The per unit prices cannot be compared directly because the two products use different unit scales. Compare total treatment cost instead.
Can Botox help my jaw clenching or TMJ pain?
Neurotoxin injected into the masseter muscle can reduce the force of clenching, and many patients report less jaw soreness and fewer tension headaches as a result. Over repeated treatments it can also slim a jawline that has widened from masseter overuse. Whether it is appropriate for your jaw pain depends on the cause, so this is assessed at consultation and may warrant evaluation beyond what an aesthetic visit covers.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe it as a series of quick pinches lasting a second each. The needles used are very fine. Ice, a vibration device, or topical numbing cream are all available. Topical numbing adds roughly 20 minutes to your visit, so mention it when booking if you want it.
Can I get Botox if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Botulinum toxin is not administered during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, because there is not adequate safety data in these populations. Tell your provider if there is any chance you are pregnant. We can revisit treatment afterward.
What is a lip flip and how is it different from lip filler?
A lip flip is a small amount of neurotoxin placed in the muscle around the upper lip so that the lip rolls slightly outward and shows more pink when you smile. It adds show, not volume, and lasts around 6 to 8 weeks. Lip filler adds actual volume and lasts far longer. A lip flip is $130 here, while a liquid lip flip using a half syringe of filler is $375. Some patients combine both.
Can I combine this with filler or a facial in the same visit?
Frequently, yes, and sequencing matters. Neurotoxin and filler are often placed in the same appointment. Energy based and resurfacing treatments are usually scheduled with spacing around neurotoxin so that heat and manipulation do not affect placement. Your provider will build the order into your plan.
What happens if I stop?
Nothing bad. The effect wears off gradually over 3 to 4 months and your muscles return to their previous movement. Lines return to where they were, not worse than before. Some patients who have treated consistently for years find their lines are less deeply etched than they otherwise would have been, because the skin has been folding less.
How soon before an event should I book?
Book at least two weeks ahead so the full effect is present and any bruising has fully resolved. Three weeks is more comfortable if the event is significant, because it leaves room for a follow up adjustment.
